Baby Tooth Vs. Permanent Tooth
Some people think that if a child knocks out their baby teeth, it is not an emergency because they are going to lose the baby tooth anyway. However, our dentists still need to take a look at the area where the tooth came out because often, when children get their teeth knocked out, the tooth may not come out completely, or there may be other damage to gum tissue that will need to be repaired.
If your child knocks out one of their permanent teeth, they will need to have the tooth replaced. Adult teeth have many functions, and one of those functions is as a placeholder. Your teeth grow next to each other to maximize the ability to chew and tear food, and if your child loses a tooth, other teeth will shift around in the area to make up for the tooth loss, which can impact their teeth and jaw.
Emergency Plan
When your child knocks out a tooth, every second counts. Here is what you need to do for an avulsed tooth. First, you need to keep calm because if your child sees you panicking, they are more likely to panic. Second, you need to take a look at the area. If it is bleeding heavily, give your child some gauze or ice to try and control the bleeding. Then, you need to give our office a call and tell us what has happened so we can get you in to see one of our dentists right away. It is important that you call us as soon as possible because if a permanent tooth gets knocked out, there is a good chance we can reattach the tooth and save it.
